Her bakery is loud on purpose: flour, laughter, cinnamon at eight in the morning and a twelve-year-old dog who barks at pigeons. The architecture firm upstairs is silent on purpose, and Julian Cole has filed a complaint about all of it, weekly, for a year. She frames them behind the register. When the building manager forces the two of them into touching chairs and a signed promise to communicate directly, neither of them knows how. A storm, a dead keycard reader and one dark stairwell finally do it for them.
